Giacomo Favaron, Senior Specialist, Insurance Pricing, AXA XL, paints a picture of how far satellite technology has come in just the time when he developed a prediction model for urban sprawl as a university researcher in the early 2000s. Back then, state-of-the-art satellite instrumentation supplied data from the visible RGB spectrum—“what the human eye can see.” Now, satellite constellations supply information from 21 spectral bands at different resolutions, and microwave radiometers see through clouds, he told CB Insights Analyst Mike Fitzgerald during Carrier Management’s recent roundtable event, “Seeing Through the Clouds: Satellites in Insurance.”
