Andrew Rear, a 30-year insurance industry veteran, has recently gained the dubious distinction of being a survivor of COVID-19. He is relieved, to say the least.
"I'm just thankful to still be here," he said.
Rear completed a four-year stint at the end of December 2020 as CEO of Munich Re's Digital Partners business - which handles the reinsurer's InsurTech investment and partnership operations. Right now, the UK-based executive is chairman of the InsurTech Buckle.
Rear had wound down his stint at Digital Partners when he first became sick. Sickness led to a brief improvement around Christmas. Then, early in the new year, Rear took a turn for the worse, requiring him to be briefly hospitalized and placed on oxygen before returning home.
Rear, 50, has been quite reflective about COVID-19, documenting his illness, in part, on Twitter. He had plenty more to say during a lengthy interview with Carrier Management Editor Mark Hollmer, who spoke with Rear via Zoom on Jan. 13, 2021, as he continued to recuperate at home, nearly a month after he first got sick. (Rear caught COVID-from his wife, who is an essential worker and dealt with relatively mild symptoms.) Listen to their discussion, which covers his COVID-19 story, and also Rear's thoughts about what he has learned.
