Mark Julian heads the UK branch of Tokio Millenium Re (TRM). He gives a rundown of how the company and R.J. Kiln, a Lloyd's managing agent, fit into Tokio Marine' group structure. He is also the head of pricing for TRM, and therefore deals closely with its clients, brokers, underwriters and technical experts. Assessing risks, especially new ones, either by line of business or geographically, is complicated. In many instances, the property catastrophe models that are highly sophisticated for some areas, are a good deal less so in others, notably casualty and many emerging markets. He explained the corollary between the need for a decent return on investment and the need for growth through diversification, as each influences the other, notably in the ILS market. Greater cooperation between the private and public sectors in assessing risk(s), could be a useful path for both parties, as well as the public.
